Autumn

5 Centimeters per Second

Autumn is a transitional period in Takaki Tohno’s life: its cooling air accompanies the growing distance between him and Risa Mizuno, then gives way to a punishing final work project that occupies him until his departure from the company. The season’s movement toward winter makes visible a change already underway—his old routines are ending, even as he struggles to explain what he wants next.

An autumn visit to Risa Mizuno

At the beginning of autumn, Takaki stops at Risa Mizuno’s apartment on his way home from work. The screens let in a cool wind, and the floor feels pleasantly cool beneath him. He has removed the tie from his deep-blue dress shirt; Risa wears a dark-brown sweater and a long skirt with large pockets. These ordinary details establish a quiet intimacy, but also sharpen Takaki’s sadness: when he notices the gentle swell of her bosom beneath the sweater, he grows more melancholy.

The visit is the first in quite a while. The last time Takaki was there, the air conditioner was still on, almost two months earlier. Work and mismatched schedules have kept them apart, and although meeting has not become impossible, they no longer make room for one another as they once did. Autumn’s cooler atmosphere thus coincides with a relationship that has not formally ended but is becoming less present in their lives.

Work and the approach of winter

As autumn deepens and the air grows clearer and colder, Takaki throws himself into finishing his final project. The confirmed end date of his employment makes him busier still: he has almost no days off and spends much of his brief time at home asleep. His body feels sluggish and feverish, and the morning train makes him horribly nauseated. Yet the relentless routine also gives him a kind of peace by leaving little time to dwell on what he regards as useless thoughts.

Takaki has told his manager that he has no complaint about his pay and that the work is not too hard; neither statement explains why he wants to leave. He cannot fully account for the decision even to himself. Despite the trouble his resignation causes, the company agrees that he will leave at the end of January. Afterward, the team leader thanks him awkwardly, while the general manager offers a solid recommendation and worries about his next job. Takaki politely declines, saying he intends to take it easy for a while.

Seasonal change and emotional transition

A typhoon brings cold winds to the Kanto region. Once it passes, Takaki begins wearing his winter suit; on one cold morning he takes his coat from storage, where it still smells faintly of mothballs. On another day, he wears the muffler Risa gave him, gradually wrapping himself in winter. The gift remains a concrete connection to her even as their meetings have grown infrequent, and the season’s accumulating layers sit beside the emotional distance established at the apartment.

By this point Takaki barely speaks to anyone, but the silence does not feel painful to him. Autumn therefore marks neither a sudden break nor a resolution. It holds together a diminishing intimacy, a self-chosen but poorly understood departure from work, and the bodily fatigue of seeing that decision through; winter arrives as the next condition of a life already changing.
